SWIMMER'S SECOND SAMPLE REPORTEDLY ALSO TESTS POSITIVE

Suspended Olympic swimmer Gary Hall Jr.'s backup urine sample also tested
positive for marijuana, his attorney told The Arizona Republic.

Hall, 23, was suspended temporarily earlier this month by the international
swimming federation FINA, which said he tested positive for marijuana during
a May 15 competition in Phoenix.

Hall's attorney, Ed Hendricks, said Thursday that Hall was informed
Wednesday about the positive test of the "B" sample. The test was performed
at an International Olympic Committee laboratory in Montreal.

Neither Hall nor a FINA representative could be reached for comment
Thursday, the newspaper reported.

Hendricks said he has asked for a formal hearing by FINA's doping panel, and
has filed an objection to FINA's contention that the positive test results
represent a second offense. Such a finding could result in a suspension of
up to two years.

Hall tested positive for marijuana during the 1996 Olympics. FINA added
marijuana to its banned list just before the Atlanta Games, but the rule did
not take effect until after the competition.

Hendricks also contends FINA lacks authority to impose a suspension for a
"non-performance enhancing substance" for a test taken at a non-sanctioned
event.

Hall won gold medals as part of the U.S. 400-meter freestyle and 400-meter
medley relay teams in the Atlanta Games. He also won silver medals in the 50
and 100 freestyle.
