SMOKE GETS IN THEIR EYES

SO some members of the shadow cabinet admit to smoking cannabis in their
youth. I know the drug promotes fuzzy thinking, but didn't realise the
effects last so long.

V Horton, Kineton, Warwicks

NOW we know that smoking cannabis does have serious ill-effects after all.

Roy Bland, St Ives, Cornwall

FORGIVE my being obtuse but if Ann Widdicombe proposes to fine individuals
for possessing cannabis, but for them not to incur a criminal record,
doesn't that amount to decriminalising cannabis? Perhaps she should simply
call the fine a licence fee, and relieve the police by creating cannabis
detector vans.

Gareth Davies, Gateshead

May I suggest that every member of the Tory party who has ever smoked pot
pays a UKP 100 "conscience fine" to Conservative Central office? It would
give the Tories a good fighting fund.

Geoff Wicks, Basildon, Essex

I WAS intrigued that most of the contributors to your article "Where
there's smoke..." (G2, October 6) used smoking as an excuse not to have
used cannabis more. Surely most of them enjoy a piece of cake with their
cup of tea?

Mike Lowcock, Wistaston, Cheshire

IF CANNABIS is legalised, please can advertising it be made illegal -
sparing us pictures of flying cowboys, torn psychedelic satin cloths and
whatever else would be deemed appropriate by agencies for branding the product.
