COLLEGE TOWN DRAWS DETROIT DRUG TRADE

BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA -- A lucrative market for crack cocaine has enticed
Detroit-area dealers to set up shop in Bloomington, authorities say.

Of 18 convictions for cocaine possession or dealing in the Monroe County
court system over the past year, seven involved defendants from Detroit.

Luring dealers from Detroit are the higher prices they can charge in this
college town, home of the main campus of Indiana University, said Detective
Wendy Pritchard-Kelly of the Bloomington Police Department.

"A rock that would go for $10 in Detroit would go for $50 here in
Bloomington," she said.

The greater supply of crack in cities such as Detroit, Indianapolis and
Chicago means dealers can buy it cheaply there and sell it profitably in
Bloomington, said Jeff Kehr of the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office.
