PACT EXTENDS BAN ON RANDOM DRUG TESTS

SOMERVILLE (AP) -- A temporary injunction against random drug testing at
Hunterdon Central Regional High School will become permanent and the case
will go directly to appeals, under an agreement reached by attorneys.

Superior Court Judge Robert E. Guterl, assignment judge for Hunterdon,
Somerset, and Warren counties, was expected to sign the agreement this week.

Guterl issued an injunction to temporarily halt random drug testing of
students earlier this month after determining that the testing "has been
shown to be an immediate and irreparable harm."

School attorneys appealed the injunction, but after a series of meetings
beginning Jan. 19, both sides agreed to accept Guterl's decision.
