FOCUS SHOULD BE ON GOOD THAT POLICE DO

The sound of sirens has been relentless. There is little doubt that it's a
result of the crimes and violence created by the drug culture that has
permeated Schenectady. The frustration level must be overwhelming for the
police officers who face the dangers daily. Those committed to "protect and
serve" put their lives on the line to assure our safety.

Common sense and logic suggest that rather than creating dissension by
undermining the actions of the Police Department, it would much better
serve the community to band together. Not only would this help strengthen
the morale, but it would reinforce all the positive strides made by the
police to ensure public safety. This may be a good time to remember that in
unity we gain strength.

It would be idyllic to offer praise and thanks for the men and women who
fight this war against drugs each day, rather than condemn all for the
misguided actions of a few. Those misguided who acted on some self-serving
agenda must pay a high price, but to let that determine the character of a
whole Police Department defies logic.

Far too often, reports in the news aid in creating dissension. The majority
in law enforcement is much more deserving of appreciation and praise.

One can only thank and respect those who work to rid the streets of the
pariahs, the dealers and distributors who are dictated by greed and act
without conscience. They respect no one, not even their primary victims:
the addicts. They live by the sword and would murder anyone who gets in
their way. Why would anyone choose to diminish the efforts of the Police
Department when faced with these dangers?

Let the officers do their work, and please set the criticisms aside.
