NEW WA PREMIER TO CONSIDER HEROIN INJECTING ROOMS
Western Australia's Premier-elect, Geoff Gallop, has pledged to introduce
heroin injecting rooms into his State if the move is approved at a proposed
drug summit.
Dr Gallop has told ABC television he is keen to follow the example of New
South Wales where it has planned to establish a safe injecting room in
Kings Cross.
"There've been some good ideas that have come out of that, that are really
focused on reducing the amount of deaths and making sure we can deal with
that problem in terms of drug abuse," he said.
"We're very hopeful that some new ideas can go forward...we want them to be
legitimised by the stakeholders so that if they're carried out, there is
that support within the community for them."
