FILM 'TRAFFIC' IGNORED A DRUG-WAR SOLUTION
The movie Traffic, nominated last week for several Oscars, paints a
depressing picture of the drug war in the United States. It does not hint
at the only possible solution: decriminalization. The money spent on
defoliation, as well as imprisonment of traffickers and users, should
instead be used for the treatment and rehabilitation of drug addicts.
Why is this not even being considered? Powerful interests, the huge prison
industry and the array of law-enforcement personnel, are arrayed against
any talk of decriminalization.
