BEAZLEY CONSIDERS HEROIN TRIAL

TRIALS of heroin on prescription would be considered under a Labor federal
government, Kim Beazley said yesterday.

But the ALP leader did not think they would be an answer to drug abuse. Mr
Beazley said he might be prepared to lift the veto imposed by Prime
Minister John Howard on proposed state prescription trials.

However, he said he thought it unrealistic to think the situation would
arise because they were state responsibilities and there were ``mixed
views'' about them. And he did not seem so keen either, despite the trials
being part of his policy.

Mr Beazley told Melbourne radio he would not necessarily approve a project,
but would look at how it could work.

"But I've got to say this: It is not an answer. It's part of an answer,''
he said.
