DRUG DROUGHT WILL BE BRIEF

Piers Akerman is the only one who still believes that the current shortage
of drugs is anything but a temporary restraint in the free flow of heroin
(``A victory we all should celebrate,'' Daily Telegraph, February 22).

A tenet of capitalism is that a demand is met by a supply, and this is
especially so in the profitable and worldwide industry of illegal drug supply.

This industry has the advantage of being outside the law, so is not
subjected to the constraints of commercial propriety, customs duties and
the tax man. Anyone who is capable of completing a BAS statement is well
able to run an international drug smuggling racket.
