NSW POLICE HOTLINE HELPS REDUCE DRUG CRIME

New South Wales police say new figures highlight the increasing
effectiveness of the CrimeStoppers hotline in reducing drug-related crime.

Police say figures for last year show a 50 per cent jump in the number of
information reports to the telephone line compared with 1999.

The biggest increase is in the number of drug-related information reports,
up 98 per cent last year.

The coordinator of the Crime Stoppers hotline, Larry McItrick, says the
drug related reports have led to substantial increases in drug seizures.

"There's some significant quantities of cannabis but also heroin and
cocaine has been seized over the last 12 months," he said.

"In 1999, we confiscated less than a million dollars worth of drugs, in
2000 we've done almost $6 million."
