OBEY BECAUSE IT IS THE LAW

Your correspondent Lyndon Smith, like so many others, misses the point
entirely (Letters, March 9).

Whether we agree or not, laws exist and some of those laws make certain
things, such as stealing, murder, speeding and shooting someone, illegal.

These laws also make it illegal to possess, sell, move, alter, use or
assist, counsel, aid and abet others in doing so, goods that are prohibited
imports. Some prohibited imports are weapons; others are known harmful
substances.

A few people don't agree that the speed limit is high enough, but we
require they obey the law, simply because it is the law.

So if you use illicit drugs you are a criminal, and should be provided
medical help to break your addiction and obey the nation's laws.

The penalty of breaking such a law should be compulsory detox and
rehabilitation.

Michael D. Robinson, Hurlstone Park, March 9.
