MORE AFA CADETS CHARGED

Five more Air Force Academy cadets were charged Wednesday with use or sale
of illegal drugs, as one of the biggest scandals in the 46-year history of
the school continues to unfold.

Two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore were charged with using or
distributing eight drugs, including LSD and Ecstasy, according to an
academy news release. And officials said other cadets may be charged.

If court-martialed, the five face from five to 52 years in military prison,
the release said. They are expected to make their first appearances next week.

Of the 35 cadets originally investigated in the drug scandal, 12 were cleared.

Two cadets have been court-martialed and sent to military prison. Nine were
punished for not coming forward with information; one quit the academy; and
at least six remain under scrutiny.

The latest cadets and the charges against them:

Senior Neil E. McColgan was charged with using dextromethorphan (DXM),
found in over-the-counter cough medicine, which causes hallucinations in
large doses; gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), similar to Ecstasy;
hallucinogenic mushrooms; LSD; marijuana; Ketamine, an animal tranquilizer;
and Ecstasy. McColgan also is alleged to have warned another cadet of a
urinalysis sweep. He faces up to 37 years' confinement.

Junior Kevin M. O'Keefe was charged with selling Ecstasy and the
prescription drug Ritalin; asking another cadet to sell Ecstasy; using
Ecstasy; and possessing marijuana. O'Keefe faces up to 52 years in prison.

Junior Matthew N. Garchow was charged with using Ecstasy, which carries up
to five years in prison.

Sophomore Mark E. Arsenault is charged with attempted use of LSD, which
could bring up to five years in prison.

Senior Ryan K. Young is charged with LSD use and going AWOL, which brings
up to five years and a month in prison.

All face possible dismissal from the Air Force and forfeiture of pay and
allowances.
