POLICE IN SCHOOLS

Christchurch: Police drug dogs have been called into several Christchurch
secondary schools to counter an influx of cannabis.

Good growth conditions and a switch in growing methods had increased the
drug supply, and one school had already expelled five students for marijuana
use this year.

Papanui police youth aid officer Ted Davidson said the unit had been invited
to carry out searches at several schools.

Christ's College acting headmaster Richard Bromley said the five students
had been "removed" from the school after they were caught smoking marijuana
in a boarding house two weeks ago.

He said police searches of boarding houses had found no further illegal
substances.

"We feel it is important to act decisively in matters relating to drugs," he
said.

All the students involved were now at other schools, he said.
