ECSTASY PENALTIES INCREASED IN US
The US Sentencing Commission has sharply increased guideline penalties for
selling the amphetamine known as ecstasy.
Starting next month the punishment for importing or selling the party drug
will be more severe than for selling cocaine.
The new sentencing guidelines to be followed by federal judges will roughly
triple the likely prison term for the sale of pills to up to 10 years.
Advocates of higher penalties, including the Justice Department, say the
punishment is needed to curb the dramatic increase in the drug's use.
But opponents have accused the commission of ignoring scientific testimony,
which states that ecstasy is not as addictive or destructive as other drugs.
