MANHATTAN: DRUG AGENT INDICTED
A federal Drug Enforcement Administration agent was charged yesterday with
fraudulently obtaining United States visas for Nigerian nationals, Mary Jo
White, the United States attorney, announced. The agent, Eric Newton, 40,
had obtained the visas by saying the nationals were drug-enforcement agents
who needed D.E.A.-sponsored training in Quantico, Va., the indictment said.
The Nigerians had each paid $4,000 to Mr. Newton, prosecutors said. Mr.
Newton's lawyer, Thomas G. Roth, could not be reached for comment.
