OPPOSITION ENCOURAGES GOVT TO GO FURTHER ON DRUGS POLICY

The Shadow Health Minister, Jenny Macklin, has welcomed the Federal
government's national drug campaign.

The Prime Minister launched the $27 million Tough On Drugs program
yesterday, ahead of a round of television advertisements encouraging
families to talk about drugs, and the distribution of a pamphlet to
every household.

Ms Macklin says it is an important issue, but she says some may view
the launch cynically since the money has been waiting to be spent
since 1998.

She says if the Government is serious about the drug problem, they
should also take up practical issues, such as creating more methadone
treatment places.

"We also know the Government is sitting on $18 million of unspent
money to expand drug treatment services and more places for
methadone," she said.
