COOPERATING WITH THE FBI

Regarding your March 15 article "The rest of Chatham's marijuana haul
vanishes" and related news stories: I wish the public to know that I, as
well as all of the deputies, are cooperating to the fullest possible extent
with the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding the larceny of marijuana
initially seized by our department in February 2000. The Sheriff's
Department wants this matter resolved and finalized as quickly as citizens
do. We ask that any Chatham County citizen with knowledge regarding the
larceny of the marijuana please call the FBI's Charlotte office at
704-377-9200.

Further, I would like to reiterate that former Sheriff Donald Whitt
contacted the FBI immediately when the marijuana was discovered missing,
and when I formally took office I contacted the FBI to make sure that this
case was a priority. Additionally, I am conducting a thorough review of all
departmental operating policies and procedures and will make necessary
changes when and where appropriate.

Finally, I am still restricted in discussing the details of this case until
I am formally provided investigative information from the FBI. Upon
receiving preliminary investigative information from the FBI, I will follow
their advice regarding the release of information to the public.

I am asking residents to please continue their support to the Chatham
County Sheriff's Department and its officers as we continue to serve them.
This has been a difficult time for our department as well as the public.

IKE GRAY

Sheriff of Chatham County

Pittsboro
