COLOMBIA: FROM BAD TO WORSE
Eleven captains and five majors who were dismissed in October from the
Colombian Army have since joined a right-wing paramilitary group that
massacres villagers suspected of being rebel sympathizers, El Espectador
reported. Citing documents and interviews, the paper said the 16 officers
joined the illegal United Self Defense Forces of Colombia after being
cashiered along with 369 other officers and soldiers. Juan Forero (NYT)
