JUDGE CLEARS WAY FOR KINGS CROSS DRUG INJECTION CENTRE

The Supreme Court in Sydney has cleared the way for the Uniting Church to
begin operating its drug injection centre in Kings Cross.

Justice Brian Sully found no basis to allow the Kings Cross Chamber of
Commerce's attempt to prevent the centre's operation.

The Chamber of Commerce says it is considering appealing against the
decision, but the Uniting Church's Harry Herbert says it is time the
chamber dropped its opposition and allowed a trial of the drug injection
centre to proceed.

In his decision, Justice Sully found the proposal for the injection centre
as well-thought through, and that there was no lawful impediment for the
centre being operated by the church trust.

He also found the Director General Of Health and Commissioner of Police had
acted properly in agreeing that the licence be granted.

Reverend Herbert says the trial of the centre will begin as soon as possible.
