POLICE SEIZE $100,000 WORTH OF MARIJUANA

Police seized 52 pounds of marijuana early Tuesday from a car parked at Oak
Forest apartments.

Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team officers received an anonymous tip
Monday about a suspicious vehicle parked at the apartment complex off
LaRoche and DeRenne avenues.

CNT agents seized the early '90s-model Buick at 2 a.m. Tuesday. They found
52 pounds of marijuana, wrapped in plastic wrap, in the trunk, but made no
arrests, said CNT Commander Steve Smith.

Although the marijuana was found in the same complex where a cab driver was
shot and killed early Monday, authorities do not believe the two cases are
related.

"At this time we have no reason to believe there's a connection between the
drugs and the homicide," Smith said.

At $120 an ounce, the marijuana is worth nearly $100,000.

"If it was sold in smaller lots, like dime bags, it'd be worth a lot more
than that," Smith said.

The car was registered outside of Chatham County, he said, and police were
unsure if anyone at the complex owned the car.
