POLICE FIND OPIUM IN CANNED PEACHES
Police at a roadside check point in western Mexico arrested a taxi driver
on drug charges after they found he was carrying 20 pounds of opium in
sealed cans of cling peaches in heavy syrup, prosecutors reported Saturday.
Police in the western state of Michoacan said they became suspicious about
the taxi driver's odd diet after they stopped him and found one loaf of
bread and eight large, 4.5-pound cans of peaches in his car.
Traffickers had apparently not only canned the peach-opium combination, but
they had also apparently manufactured labels or re-glued old labels onto
the cans, doing such a poor job that it tipped off police.
