STUDENT PRAISES DARE

I was very disturbed by the April 8 letter from Robert Sharpe about how the
DARE Program doesn't work.

I am 12 years old and I am a graduate of the DARE program.

Last year, when I took DARE in Grade 5, we had a new boy in our class who
couldn't speak English. He had to have a translator with him.

At the end of the year, RCMP Const. Kate Bamber asked him what he learned.
He said, "Drugs bad."

Mr. Sharpe's letter stated, in a way, the messages are not getting across
to the students. This boy got the message in a totally new language.

The letter also stated students were getting lied to about marijuana.

We were not lied to. We watched movies which showed us what would happen if
we used any drugs. We were shown and told the truth.

The DARE program with Const. Bamber was one of the most enjoyable learning
experiences I have ever been through. I hope everyone gets a chance to go
through DARE.
