DRUG ABUSERS NOT WORTHY ICONS
The Acid Test: Would anyone be clamoring to honor Richard Pryor if he was
some white, foul-mouthed, druggie free-baser who darn near killed himself
in the process?
He may have been a talented entertainer to some but elected to utilize the
lowest form of comedic expression to bring notoriety to himself. He most
certainly could have done more for your city had he desired to do so. An
icon for some, for many a forgettable personality. A wasted talent by his
own doing.
If you set your standards low enough, you can name something after anyone.
Naming public facilities should be enriching, not divisive. Drug abuse is
one of this country's major social problems. Regardless of talent, drug
abusers are not worthy icons.
