WAR ON ADDICTS

Dartmouth, N.S. -- As a resident of Nova Scotia, I would like to
offer Mike Harris a job down here when he has finished straightening
out the problems in Ontario. I read in the local papers that the
Ontario government is going to require welfare recipients to be sober
and be able to read and write to collect their cheques. What is the
problem with that? Apparently some groups, notably the caseworkers'
union, are upset with what they consider a violation of people's
human rights.

Stop insulting the intelligence of the people of Ontario with such
rubbish. While they profess concern over stereotyping the poor, their
real concern is job losses that will occur if a large number of
people are taken off the welfare rolls. Living in a province where
some have taken advantage of the welfare system for two or three
generations, I applaud any government that wants to put a stop to
this cradle-to-grave reliance on others to provide.

I believe society has an obligation to help those who are less
fortunate, but I also believe that the people receiving the support
have to be willing to help themselves to be productive members of
society.

So, Premier Harris, keep this job offer in mind as we have many
problems down here that could use some of your "common sense"
governing.
