POT CANDIDATE APOLOGIZES FOR 'IRRESPONSIBLE' REMARKS

Marijuana Party candidate Noreen Evers said she made a mistake when she
offered an off-the-cuff comment at the end of the Campbell River T.V.
Association all candidates debate last Thursday night.

In her closing comments, Evers encouraged recreational marijuana users to
come out of the closet and "smoke a doobie."

"I want to apologize to the people of Campbell River who were watching,"
Evers said. "That was really, really irresponsible. I'm not saying people
should smoke a joint walking down the street. I believe in moderation, and
I believe in impairment testing (for drivers)."

Her comment was intended to imply that she believes people should be more
open about the issue of decriminalizing marijuana use.

"I was thinking about that all night, I've got to apologize," Evers added.

She added that a quotation attributed to Martin Luther King Junior better
illustrates what the Marijuana Party is getting at: "We have a moral
responsibility to disobey unjust laws."

In her own defence, Evers said she did not have closing comments prepared
for the event last Thursday night and made the statement to lighten the
atmosphere.
