HARM-REDUCTION OPPOSITION FOOLISH
More is needed from experts like Robert Sharpe of the Lindesmith Center-Drug
Policy Foundation ["U.S. Should Follow Europe's Lead in Drug Law,"
Viewpoints, Jan. 3]. We can no longer afford to ignore the evidence that
heroin maintenance drastically cuts drug use, recruitment, underworld and
terrorist funding and disease spread.
Our political leaders have never looked so stubbornly foolish as they do on
the drug war and their opposition to harm-reduction programs. We desperately
need a rational drug policy that rejects prohibition orthodoxy.
