NSW GOVT DEFENDS THE OPERATION OF HEROIN INJECTING CENTRE

The New South Wales Government is defending the rules governing the
Kings Cross heroin injecting centre after criticism from the
Opposition.

The Opposition's police spokesman Andrew Tink claims there are no
regulations on how the centre is operated and no rules of conduct for
people using the injecting room.

The Special Minister for New South Wales John Della Bosca says eight
protocols are already in place governing the injecting room.

He says so far the protocols ensure the centre operates within the
guidelines set down in discussions with the community.

"There are a number of protocols which have been put in place," he said.

"All those matters are being looked after very adequately in the
current legislation by the Uniting Church conducting the trial."
