CALIFORNIA: 12 TONS OF COCAINE ARE SEIZED
The United States attorney in San Diego announced that the Coast Guard had
made the largest seizure of cocaine ever made at sea, about 12 tons of the
drug from a ship registered in Belize with a crew of Russians and
Ukrainians. A federal prosecutor, Gonzalo Curiel, said the crew of the
52-foot fishing vessel was arrested after the discovery of the cocaine. The
Coast Guard made the seizure about 500 miles south of Acapulco on May 3,
then brought the boat and its 10-member crew to San Diego.
