US COAST GUARD SEIZE POSSIBLE RECORD AMOUNT OF COCAINE
US Coast Guard crews have seized almost 12 tonnes of cocaine on a fishing
vessel, in what officials say could be the largest maritime cocaine bust
ever recorded.
The fishing vessel was seized earlier this month with 10 crew members from
Russia and the Ukraine on board.
It was located about 2,500 kilometres south of the California port of San
Diego, and towed ashore.
Sailors on a US Navy ship first discovered the suspicious fishing vessel,
then turned the smuggling investigation over to the Coast Guard.
Authorities say it took several days to locate the contraband, as the drugs
were hidden in secret compartments.
The previous record cocaine seizure was 11,000 kilograms of the drug in 1995.
