WASHINGTON: REPORTS ON ARRESTS REVIEWED
Donnie R. Marshall, the administrator of the Drug Enforcement
Administration said he had ordered a review of reports that the
agency's Caribbean office inflated the numbers of drug seizures and
arrests. The Miami Herald reported that the agency's office in San
Juan, P.R., claimed credit for hundreds of arrests that were made by
local police. A former supervisor was reported to have said that 70
percent of the arrests the agency claimed from 1998 through 2000 were
phony.
