KIDS ARE DRUG AWARE
Peer pressure to experiment with drugs and alcohol at a young age can be a difficult thing to overcome.
With the help of the Squamish RCMP the DARE program has helped youngsters overcome some of those difficulties by giving them the tools to help them say no.
Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) is a comprehensive education program designed to equip elementary-aged children with skills to recognize and resist social pressures to experiment with alcohol and drugs.
This year, all Grade 6 students in Squamish received the DARE program from trained officers from the RCMP.
DARE graduations ceremonies are fast approaching. The community is invited to come out and celebrate with the students.
Ceremonies will be held at Brackendale Elementary May 22 at 7 p.m.; Garibaldi Highlands Elementary May 23 at 7 p.m.; Valleycliffe Elementary May 24 at 7 p.m.; Stawamus Elementary May 29 at 1:30 p.m.
Mamquam and Squamish Elementary Schools have yet to finalize their ceremonies. The DARE program is growing in community support as well.
"Many people may have already seen the new DARE vehicle around town," said Const. Daniela Czymoch. "The vehicle will be used to create awareness in the community about the program." The vehicle is supported by Sea to Sky Ford, Elliott Insurance and Insight Sign Group.
Other supporters include: Clarica, Garibaldi Graphics, Save-On-Foods, ICBC Road Sense, Squamish Networking Breakfast Association, Squamish Elks and Order of the Royal Purple Lodge.
