GARDNER'S REPORTING HONOURED
Citizen writer Dan Gardner has won the Lindesmith Centre-Drug Policy
Foundation's Edward M. Brecher Award for his 16-part series, "Losing
the War on Drugs."
The Lindesmith Centre, based in New York, is a drug policy institute
dedicated to drug policy reform and broadening public debate beyond
the war on drugs.
Mr. Gardner shares the award with Dan Forbes of Salon.com.
Mr. Gardner's research took him to Colombia, Mexico, San Diego, New
York City and Washington, D.C. over five months.
Yesterday, Mr. Gardner said he feels "cautiously optimistic" in the
wake of recent developments, including the creation of a House of
Commons committee created to examine the use of non-medical drugs.
"Losing the War on Drugs" was also nominated for a prestigious
Michener Award, given for meritorious public service in journalism.
The winner is to be announced tomorrow at Rideau Hall.
