I DON'T SYMPATHIZE

I've been following the Opinion page for the last few weeks and have
noticed numerous letters from "drug policy" think tanks all over the
country. The latest ("Bush's bad choice," May 16) was from Stephen
Heath of the Drug Policy Forum of Florida in Clearwater.

I smell a rat.

Why do these people constantly side with law-breaking, "suffering"
drug abusers?

I am not afraid to say I feel no empathy for drug abusers, who at
some point knew in their hearts the right thing to do and refused to
do it. I can't empathize because I obey the law - simple as that.

It's really incredible that Mr. Heath sees the drug abuser as a
victim. What rational human would take up heroin or start smoking
crack?

We must allow people to experience the consequences of their actions.
Besides this, I have no interest in making these people better,
reforming them or rehabilitating them. And I shouldn't be forced to
do so through "social services" (taxation). I don't want my wallet to
be the safety net for foolish and selfish individuals. There are
people of better character who can use the money.

And, by the way, if I choose to be compassionate for a drug abuser, I
want to make that decision. Otherwise, it isn't compassion.
