BUSH DAUGHTER PLEADS NO CONTEST TO ALCOHOL CHARGE
AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - One of President Bush's twin 19-year-old
daughters pleaded no contest to an underage drinking charge while the
other, in her second recent alcohol-related case, pleaded innocent, an
Austin court spokeswoman said on Friday.
Barbara and Jenna Bush had been scheduled to appear in court on June 18 to
face alcohol-related misdemeanor charges.
But Austin Municipal Courts spokeswoman Patty Gonzales confirmed that
Barbara Bush entered a plea of no contest on Thursday to a charge of being
a minor in possession of alcohol. The plea was entered through her lawyer,
Gerry Morris. Bush, a student at Yale University in Connecticut, did not
appear in court.
A judge sentenced her to eight hours of community service and an alcohol
awareness class, and said the case would be dismissed if she completed the
terms of probation by Sept. 7.
Jenna Bush, a student at the University of Texas in Austin, pleaded
innocent to a charge of trying to use someone else's identification to buy
alcohol. Her case is scheduled for July 31, and her lawyer, William
Allison, could appear on her behalf. The plea was noted in a June 6 letter
from the court to Allison.
The charges stemmed from a May 31 evening out at a popular Austin
restaurant, Chuy's. Authorities were alerted by the restaurant that young
people, under the legal drinking age of 21, were trying to purchase alcohol.
The incident was the second alcohol-related case involving Jenna Bush in as
many weeks. She pleaded no contest to being a minor in possession of
alcohol on May 16 in an unrelated incident.
In that case, Austin Municipal Court Judge Elisabeth Earle ordered her to
perform eight hours of community service and take a six-hour alcohol
awareness class.
