TRENTON: PROFILING REPORT RELEASED
The State Senate Judiciary Committee is urging that New Jersey become the
first state to outlaw consent searches, in which police officers ask
drivers' permission to search their vehicles. In its 116- page report on
racial profiling, the committee said that as early as 1994, minority-group
drivers underwent "consent searches at inordinately high, indeed, disparate
rates." The committee urged Acting Gov. Donald T. DiFrancesco, left, to ban
the searches by executive order. Senate Democrats said the report did not
go far enough because it did not propose legislation to outlaw the searches
should Mr. DiFrancesco fail to act.
