COURT TOLD OF POT DISCOVERY
When marijuana crusader Grant Krieger was busted with two pot plants
outside his home, he warned police to turn a blind eye if they went
inside.
"He said, 'You don't want to go in there, you will find other plants
inside,' " Const. Christian Vermette said, of his Aug. 25, 1999, arrest
of Krieger.
"If you go inside, you better close your eyes," Vermette quoted the
Calgary man as saying.
Krieger, 46, is charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of
trafficking after police uncovered a "grow operation" at his northwest
home.
Vermette had gone to the home on unrelated business when he noticed
Krieger in the backyard.
He told a one-man, 11-woman jury he saw the two plants resting on a
table, leading to his arrest of the city man.
When Krieger asked to go inside to get his lawyer's phone number,
Vermette said he would have to go with him, leading to the conversation
about the plants in the home.
Meanwhile, Det. Barry Balerud testified he searched Krieger's residence
at 4611 Bowness Rd. N.W., after the arrest.
Inside, Balerud found various items related to marijuana growing and
several other plants.
He told Crown prosecutor Scott Couper the total weight of the 29 seized
plants after they were cut was 6.35 kg.
Balerud also found documents related to the Universal Compassion Club,
and lists of people whom Krieger had sent packages to.
Under cross-examination, Balerud said that in investigating about 80
grow operations, this was the only one where he found documents relating
to the compassion club.
He told defence lawyer Adriano Iovinelli that it was rare to find
documents listing names of customers and quantities. The trial continues
today.
