TOXIC DAMAGE
Conspicuously absent from the article "A wary look at life's battles in
Colombia's cocaine belt" (Page A12, June 3) is the environmental damage
caused by the $1.3 billion Plan Colombia. Toxic herbicides are sprayed from
above, hitting water supplies, staple crops, and people. This drives
peasants further into the Amazon basin, which leads to more rain forest
destruction.
