Blunkett Lets Cannabis Users Off With Warning

People caught taking cannabis will be let off with just a police warning in
a softer approach to Britain's drugs problem.

But David Blunkett wants a ruthless crackdown on heroin and cocaine dealers.

The Home Secretary gave the clearest signal yet that he wants police chiefs
to tailor their tactics to problem in their own areas.

The move came as the Lambeth experiment, which will caution cannabis users,
began today in Brixton, South London.

A Home Office official said: "The Lambeth experiment does actually fit in
with the Home Secretary's views on this.

"They are going to concentrate their resources on tackling crack and heroin
and the crime that surrounds that habit and that mirrors Mr Blunkett's
stance on this. We will be watching it with interest."

Mr Blunkett's views are in stark contrast to his predecessor Jack Straw who
had a zero tolerance approach. Campaigners believe cannabis could
eventually be decriminalised.

The six month Lambeth scheme will be adopted nationwide if it leads to a
drop in drug crime.
