SUSPECT KILLED
Officers Serving Warrant Shoot Armed Man
Officers shot and killed an armed Sparks man hiding in his bathroom Tuesday
morning as a search warrant was served at his home, Oklahoma Bureau of
Narcotics spokesperson Mark Woodward said.
Kirk Massie, 49, was armed with a double-barrel shotgun when agents entered
his Lincoln County home at 7:50 a.m. to serve a warrant for
methamphetamine, Woodward said.
Woodward said two other occupants were in the home and taken into custody.
Two agents were forced to break down the bathroom door and ordered Massie
to drop his weapon, Woodward said. Massie reportedly refused to drop the
gun, raising it in a threatening manner before agents fatally shot him
three to four times, the spokesman said.
Woodward said Massie was holding a plastic bag containing a substance
believed to be methamphetamine at the time.
Search warrants were executed simultaneously Tuesday morning at two
locations, Woodward said. One was at Massie's residence in Sparks and the
other was at his former wife's property in Chandler.
Unbeknownst to law officials, Woodward said, Massie had two cameras and a
microphone planted in the yard in front of his home. A number of monitors
were stationed throughout the residence, including the bedroom. "This made
the situation even more dangerous for us," said Woodward. "He saw us
coming. This was an extremely unusual situation. We were very fortunate
things weren't any worse."
Woodward said a 20-foot-by-20-foot underground concrete bunker was found at
the Chandler property. He said the door was hydraulic and remote-controlled.
"We had to tie a rope to it and remove it with a backhoe," he said.
He said the bunker had a meth lab, more monitors, a shower and a telephone.
Officials said they believe Massie used the bunker to do the majority of
manufacturing and he was there as recently as Monday evening. Another
bunker was discovered at Massie's residence but nothing of importance was
found there, officers said.
Woodward said the agency received a tip of Massie's activities two years
ago and has had him under surveillance ever since.
"We were able to build a pretty strong case against him," he said.
The other suspects were Tammy Melot and Jimmy Marcus, who were booked at
the Lincoln County jail.
Agents said more bags of controlled substances and possibly other weapons
were found at the residence.
Other agencies assisting OBN were the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, the
District 23 District Attorney's Drug Task Force, the Kickapoo Tribal Police
and the Oklahoma Air National Guard.
Woodward said there were no signs of militia involvement. He said Massie's
death was being investigated by the OSBI and a review board, as per agency
policy.
Massie has six prior convictions dating back to August 1995 in Seminole
County and November 1997 in Lincoln County. He also served time with the
Department of Corrections in McAlester, records show.
