KENTUCKY OFFICER KILLS MAN AFTER CHASE

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. - A passenger in a car that was pursued by police was
shot and killed by an Elizabethtown officer, according to Kentucky State
Police. Harold G. Lee Jr., 29, of Owensboro, was fatally shot after a
high-speed chase late Monday night in Hardin County, state police at
Elizabethtown said.

The driver of the car, Randall Babb, 40, also of Owensboro, was arrested
and charged with parole violation, wanton endangerment, driving under the
influence and fleeing and evading.

The Babb car had been stopped for speeding at 10:15 p.m. CDT but left the
scene when Sgt. William Bland of the Elizabethtown Police Department
approached the driver. After tire deflation devices were successfully used
by state police, the chase ended at the intersection of Kentucky 1357 and 1375.

Elizabethtown police officer Rob Green apprehended Babb, who was trying to
escape on foot, state police said.

Meanwhile, Bland approached the car with his weapon drawn. While attempting
to remove Lee from the car, Bland's weapon accidentally discharged striking
himself in the left thumb and Lee in the right temporal area, said Trooper
Steve Pavey, a state police spokesman.

Lee was transported to Hardin Memorial Hospital, where he was later
pronounced dead by the Hardin County coroner, police said.

Bland was treated at Jewish Hospital in Louisville and released, Pavey
said. Bland remained on medical leave from the police department.

Items used for manufacturing methamphetamine were recovered from the car,
police said.
