BETTER APPROACH
Re: Canada must not follow the U.S. on drug policy, Feb. 22.
Ethan Nadelman's point of view is understandable given he is an
American pro-legalization proponent and has evidently misunderstood
the European situation. Canada had a drug strategy from the mid-1980s
to the early 1990s that was very successful.
This strategy reduced the numbers of young people experimenting with
drugs to record lows.
This successful drug strategy was based on the three pillars of
prevention, enforcement and treatment. Hopefully Canada can return to
this proven, effective and sensible approach to drug abuse.
