COCAINE-FILLED BAGS KILL TORONTO MAN
A 23-year-old Toronto man collapsed and died after arriving in
Trinidad last week when some of the 114 cocaine-filled bags he'd
swallowed ruptured, autopsy results show.
Trinidad police say Darrin Millar had an epileptic-like seizure and
collapsed soon after his charter flight from Toronto arrived at
Piarco International Airport in the capital Port-of-Spain on Thursday
morning.
Millar was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
An autopsy revealed he had swallowed 114 small sausage-shaped bags
filled with cocaine worth an estimated $150,000 on the street.
The bags ``were about half the size of a hot dog,'' said a police
officer who didn't want his name used.
``Two or three of the bags were ruptured and that caused him to be
poisoned by the cocaine contents.''
Police believe Millar was a paid drug mule who swallowed the illegal
narcotic to avoid detection, but they don't know how long he was
supposed to stay in the island nation.
The officer said the investigation has shifted from Millar's death to
the drugs he was smuggling, but refused to elaborate.
The Canadian High Commission in Trinidad and the Department of
Foreign Affairs in Ottawa refused to release information about the
dead man.
