WHO'S TO BLAME?
Larry Bratton's July 1 Viewpoint prompts this response. Seldom has so much
self-serving and whining been gathered in one place. Many years of my
working career were spent in drug and alcohol treatment programs, so I
speak with some knowledge about the subject. For all of those Mr. Bratton
speaks of being "betrayed" by friends wearing a wire, the solution to the
problem is simple: Don't break the law, then you can't get caught.
I will agree with him on one point, that the law seems to be selectively
enforced. I was angry, too, about the physician getting what seemed to be
very different treatment than the average drug abuser or addict.
Finally, Mr. Bratton could use his obvious intellect and skills to help his
addict friends clean up and make something of their lives, as opposed to
sitting back and bemoaning their situation, continuing to use and abuse
drugs, getting arrested, ruining their health and lives.
Anyone who wants to make their lives better can do so - I have seen it
happen literally hundreds of times. It takes determination and hard work,
but the rewards are worth the effort.
