WHY ALLOW SOME HARMFUL DRUGS?

You asked some good questions in your editorial Debate pot legalization
(July 7), but you missed a few:

1. What is the logic in banning some drugs because they are harmful while
allowing others just as harmful? (I remind you that the 1973 Le Dain
commission concluded, "There appears to be little permanent physiological
damage from chronic use of pure opiate narcotics.")

2. If the government cannot tell us what we may or may not read, why should
it have the right to tell us what we may or may not ingest?
