IRAN SAYS IT KILLED 221 CARRYING DRUGS
TEHRAN. Iranian police officers have killed 221 drug traffickers near the
border between the northeastern province of Khorassan and Afghanistan since
January, a local police official was quoted Tuesday as having said by the
official press agency. The police official, Colonel Javad Hammed, said
1,123 traffickers and 366 of their intermediaries had also been arrested.
He did not say whether they were Afghans.
Iran, a major transit point between drug producers in Afghanistan and
Pakistan and the markets of Europe and the Gulf, has been mounting a
crackdown on drugs.
