DAY CARE PROVIDER CHARGED IN DRUG CASE

Police Said Carolyn Purdue Sold Tablets Of Xanex, A Prescription Drug Used
To Treat Anxiety And Panic Disorder, To An Undercover Agent On Three
Separate Occasions.

A Giles County day care provider has been charged with selling prescription
drugs out of her home where she watches children.

Carolyn Purdue, 47, of Narrows, has been charged with three counts of
distribution of a controlled substance, said Monroe Blevins, narcotics
officer for the Giles County Sheriff's Office.

Police said she sold 20 tablets of Xanex, a drug used to treat anxiety and
panic disorder, to an undercover agent on three separate occasions. Two of
the sales took place when she was watching children, Blevins said.

Blevins said Purdue keeps approximately five children and is therefore not
regulated by the state. Under Virginia Department of Social Services
regulations, licensing is not required by people who care for fewer than
six children excluding those of the caretaker.

"There's not a whole lot of things we can do to regulate it," said Giles
County investigator Mark Skidmore.

Purdue has been released on a $5,000 bond and has been scheduled for an
arraignment hearing Wednesday .

The charges against Purdue were among 17 drug indictments, some of which
are still sealed, issued by a grand jury Tuesday.
