PAYING THE PRICE OF CELEBRITY

The parade of celebrities going into and out of alcohol and drug
rehabilitation continues at such a pace that it's impossible to keep up.
Here's a sampling of those who have sought treatment:
. Melanie Griffith: Twelve years after being treated for alcohol and
cocaine addiction, the actress sought treatment last year for a growing
dependence on prescription drugs.

. Matthew Perry: The "Friends" star returned to a rehab clinic in March,
four years after seeking treatment for addiction to painkillers.

. Eric Clapton: In 1998, the Grammy-winning rocker opened a $6.5 million
Caribbean rehab clinic. Clapton's addiction to heroin and alcohol nearly
derailed his career in the 1970s, until he sought treatment.

. Darryl Strawberry: The New York Yankees slugger has spent more than a
decade in and out of rehab for his cocaine addiction.

. Brett Favre: The Packers quarterback entered rehab in 1996 after becoming
addicted to the painkiller Vicodin.

. Tim Allen, Charlie Sheen, Christian Slater, Robert Downey Jr. and
Andy Dick have all sought treatment at Promises Malibu, a

celeb-friendly residential rehab center.

. Carrie Fisher: The "Star Wars" star checked into rehab after a 1985 drug
overdose (--)an experience that she chronicled in her first best-seller,
"Postcards From the Edge." She did a subsequent rehab stint in 1998.

. Natalie Cole: "Sick and tired of being sick and tired," the singer
entered rehab in 1983.

. Jason Priestley: The "Beverly Hills, 90210" star was ordered to complete
a three-month treatment program following a drunk-driving conviction.

. Kirstie Alley: The former "Cheer"s star is now the international
spokesperson for the Narc-anon treatment program, which she credits for
helping her conquer her own dependence to cocaine.

. Dennis Quaid: The film star checked himself into rehab for cocaine
addiction before his 1991 marriage to actress Meg Ryan.
