FORUM TO ADDRESS METH PROBLEM
In response to The Oklahoman's and KWTV NEWS9's series "Meth: Shattered
Lives," the Citizens League will hold a public forum Tuesday night to
discuss how Oklahomans can combat the problem.
"If we are going to make a difference, change has to happen on a grassroots
level," said Jan Miller, executive director of the Citizens League. "We are
hoping people will come to share their stories, thoughts and ideas on how
we can respond to this epidemic."
The forum will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wesley United Methodist
Church, 1401 NW 25.
The forum will feature five people who will serve as "informed guests."
After they speak, the public will have the opportunity to ask questions and
to give opinions on the topic.
Guests will include Ben Brown, deputy commissioner of the Oklahoma
Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services; Lt. Tommy Terhune
of the Oklahoma City Police Department Special Operations Unit; District
Court Judge Tom Lucas, who presides over a drug court in Cleveland County;
a recovering meth user; and a drug and alcohol counselor.
Kelly Ogle and Jenifer Reynolds from NEWS9 will moderate the forum.
"The Oklahoman and Channel 9 have done a great job of giving information to
the public about meth and how it is impacting families and communities,"
Miller said. "Now we have the opportunity to hear what the public's
reaction to this problem is and discuss what we can do about it."
Miller said she hopes the forum will address some serious questions
surrounding meth: What is the addiction to it that makes mothers and
fathers give away their children, families and job? Is the legal response
making a difference in the usage of meth? And what can people in
communities do about it?
