WATERBURY: RUSSIANS MAY PAROLE SCHOLAR
John Tobin, a Fulbright scholar, will get a parole recommendation from the
warden of the Russian prison where he is being held on drug charges, a
congressman said yesterday. The congressman, Representative James Maloney,
who represents Mr. Tobin's home town of Ridgefield, said that his office
had received an e-mail message from the United States Embassy in Moscow
late Friday saying that the warden would recommend Mr. Tobin's early
release for good behavior. Mr. Tobin, 24, is at the halfway point of his
one-year sentence for marijuana possession. During talks with President
Vladimir Putin in June, President Bush said that the scholar should be
released. (AP)
