HEMP COUNCIL MEMBER RESPONDS TO COMMENTS

Rep. Fryslie's comments on the movement to re-legalize hemp production
("Letters", Aug. 2) are indicative of his opinion of the intelligence level
of his own constituency.

Fryslie suggests that since China, Russia, and India have a foothold in the
world hemp market, his constituents need to be protected by him and
like-minded legislators. ("You farmers are too dumb to be allowed to choose
your own markets and crops, and compete against the rest of the world.")

Rep. Fryslie then lists some questions to ask those of us who are advocating
that farmers be allowed to compete in the hemp market. "Ask their views on
marijuana legalization," Fryslie says. Well, why not ask our views on
legislators who pass stupid laws, then look to police for farming advice and
how to justify their own untenable positions?

"Ask them, 'Why do they want to grow hemp?'", Fryslie says. How about asking
us about the farmers who lose money daily pouring crop chemicals on corn and
soybeans?

"How do they expect to market the product?"; the final question by
father-surrogate Fryslie. Well, maybe we could talk to some Canadian farmers
who are selling their hemp in this country. Seems like South Dakota farmers
could take a shot at that market, at least. But I guess Fryslie feels his
constituent farmers aren't qualified to take steps like that.

Here's something to think about: Fryslie makes all legislative decisions
using the same mental process.
